The Abigail Philpot Case

Many college libraries are closely monitored

Abigail Philpot was in her junior year at Sailor College in Maryland.  She was an exceptionally bright young woman, and her major was Communications, with an emphasis in Radio and Television.

One of her instructors, in a course entitled "Censorship and the Media," told her she could do a research paper comparing erotic media in the United States and Europe.  With this in mind, Abigail decided it would be much quicker to utilize the Internet to do her research.  She had no personal computer, and this was the only way she could get online.

She was pleased to find a great number of web sites devoted to erotica of all kinds.  However, as she began downloading, she noticed a shadow behind her.  It was the librarian on duty, and he asked to see what she had downloaded.  When the graphic pornography was displayed on the screen, Abigail was immediately told to get her things and report to the Vice President of Instruction.

She was told she was being expelled for "downloading pornographic material in a public library."  Abigail wants you to defend her.
