Corrections Officer Core Course

This is a 14 week Adult Corrections Officer Core Course consisting of 192 hours
of instruction in specific performance and instructional objectives for local and county jails, probation institutions and Community Correctional Facilities.  This Course meets State of California, Corrections Standards Authority, Standards and Training for Corrections (STC) minimum standards for entry level adult corrections officer.

Students must meet requirements as set forth in Government Code 1029 (see below) to attend this course.  Essentially, this means you must not have any felony or domestic violence convictions and be able to pass the background screening process for Corrections Officer.  10.5 units awarded.

You must pay all tuition immediately or you will be dropped from the course. This may not apply to VA or Financial Aid applicants. Contact your counselor for verification.  If you are dropped, you are not given priority to re-enroll.

First day of class attire:  Black Dickies or slacks and black closed toe shoes, dark navy blue t-shirt.  Do not wear: shorts, tank tops, skirts, flip flops or any clothing with holes or that is torn.  Dress casual, but professional.

Schedule:

Tues. & Thurs. 6-10pm, room 36-325 and
Saturdays, 8am-5pm, room 36-325

Cost: $393 includes tuition, and health fee for CA residents.  Parking permit $40.00 extra. (NOTE: Tuition could change.  State sets the fee) Tuition could go up again before the semester starts, so please check back often for updates.

Submit college application now for Fall 2012.  You must submit an application online (there is no department application)
 at www.grossmont.edu. (if you are not a current student).  We highly recommend that you take the English Assessment Test.

 positions related to law enforcement or forensics.

CORRECTIONS ACADEMY REQUIREMENTS

APPLICATION / ENROLLMENT PROCEDURE:

Fill out college application online. (if you are not a current student)

Register for class at appointment time;  You must login to WebAdvisor to verify your registration date and time.
 

Pay required fees either online or in person at the cashiers office, approx. $392**.  Please note, the cashiers office is open Mon. - Fri. 8:00-5:00pm.  Parking permit can only be purchased online. Summer hours from June 6-Aug. 5, Mon - Thurs. 8-5pm.
 

*To ensure registration in the class, applications should be submitted as soon as possible.

POLICY & PROCEDURES (ABBREVIATED VERSION)

UNIFORMS:

Black pants (Dickie's style) for classroom attire.

Must purchase Corrections Academy uniform.  Shirts worn at all times.  T-Shirts $15 ea. (must purchase 4) 

Sweatshirt $18,  running shorts, PT only, $18.  Sweat pants for Assaultive Behavior class, $18 (you must purchase at least one of each sweatshirt, sweatpants
and shorts).  Please note shorts are not allowed during Assaultive Behavior class.  $1 extra charge per X over L for T-shirt / sweatshirt / sweatpants / shorts.

Total for 4 t-shirts, 1 sweatshirt, 1 pair sweatpants, 1 pair shorts + tax = $124.00, includes tax.  Money orders, or certified checks
only, payable to Embroidery Express.  No personal checks will be accepted.  You will order from staff first week of class, no exceptions.

Running (tennis type) shoes.  No open toe or sandals are permitted at anytime.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Should be in good physical condition to pass physical training and Assaultive Behavior components of course which may include, but are not limited to:  running, sit-ups, push-ups, stair climb, scaling six-foot wall/fence.

ATTENDANCE:

Mandatory attendance at all times (State Board of Corrections mandate). 
Tardiness will not be tolerated for any reason.  NO EXCEPTIONS!

OTHERS:

No caps of any kind allowed during Academy training, including classroom.

No facial jewelry allowed.

No jewelry of any kind can be worn during the course.

Nails can not be more than ¼” past tip of finger, (safety issue).

Ladies -  hair must be worn up at all times if long.

Men -  must be clean shaven and hair must be neat & trimmed.  Long hair is not permitted.
